Lumbar spinal stenosis is a major cause of low back pain and surgery, definitely as we age. Individuals suffering from lumbar spinal stenosis will have a shortened gait or walk and experience relief of symptoms when they bend forward. More severe symptoms include pseudoclaudication (pain in the legs triggered from prolonged periods of walking but experience relief when sitting down), numbness in the legs, and/or muscle weakness.
Medical treatment options typically are limited to muscle relaxers, heat, rest, and analgesics. If the symptoms progress and are severe enough, surgery may be warranted. Conservative treatment options at Taylor Spine and Sports Rehabilitation include distraction and flexion of the lumbar spine and physical therapy. For those not experiencing severe neurological symptoms, conservative treatment can be very effective in reducing pain and improving your quality of life.
