A bulging disc in the neck or low back can be debilitating. Sometimes the bulge can be so bad that it causes a cervical radiculopathy (numbness, tingling, and loss of strength into the arm/hand). Who can work or enjoy life with this kind of pain? Surgery, anti-inflammatories, and muscle relaxers were the only treatment options given to patients for many years.
Thankfully, conservative treatment can be as effective or better than high risk treatment. According to a study done in the Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapy in 1994, conservative treatment may be a good alternative to surgery. This was a case study of 60 year old women who had a herniated disc in her neck with symptoms of a deep, constant, burning ache in the left arm, and severe neck and left shoulder pain. Within 3 weeks, her symptoms were completely resolved.
If you are experiencing symptoms of a herniated or bulging disc, try conservative treatment first. The results can be great with little to no side effects.
